In 1925, one of the most seminal events in early country music took place in the little Appalachian town of Mountain City, TN. Fiddlers gathered from all over the southeast to compete in a fiddle contest that was the high point of the fiddle’s popularity in early country music.
One hundred years later, John McCutcheon gathered some of the most well-known and well-loved figures in modern old time and bluegrass music to mark the centenary of that 1925 event. And the collection shows how much has changed in the ensuing century. The original event, sponsored in part by the KKK, couldn’t be different than this new collection. The tremendous changes in our country, the culture, and music have nearly equal number of men and women featured, Blacks and whites perform together, arrangements are surprising and thrilling. It is a celebration of both continuity and change.
Molly Tuttle, Old Crow Medicine Show, Tim O’Brien, Becky Buller, Stuart Duncan, Bruce Molsky, Sparky Rucker, Cathy & Marcy’s Old Time Coalition, Jake Blount, The Kody Norris Show, Tray Wellington & Victor Furtado, and the Earl White String Band all contributed cuts to this project that celebrates the past, showcases the present, and provides for the future.
All the artists are donating all profits of this album to the Arts Center in Mountain City, to encourage them to continue celebrating their musical heritage and build on educating young local musicians to learn to play that music.

This is a pay-what-you-will download. Knowing that there are many who’ve lost their jobs and their incomes, as well as many who are economically unfazed by this current situation, please…help yourself to the music if you cannot afford to buy it, but please be generous if you can. It’s entirely up to you.
You have 2 options for downloading this album.
1) Mp3 files. These are smaller files, more quickly downloaded, and take up less space on your devices. This is what almost all downloads are from everywhere.
2) Wav files. These are larger, full-range audio files, like you would get on a CD. They'll take longer to download and will take up more space. These are rarely offered as download files.
So why are we offering both? Because John works hard to get his albums sounding great and the compression used on mp3 files erases much of the fine tuning. John hates mp3's. Most musicians do. Yeah, we know it's kinda snobbish, but ears are what a musician is paid for, huh?
If you don't want to choose, you can have both. Listen to the mp3's on your mobile devices and burn a CD with the wav files for the total listening experience. With our compliments.
